Boundary Road Reserve Landcare Group and Boundary Road Reserve Trust

Boundary RoadA summary of the group’s activities in 2007/2008

The organization manages the rehabilitation and maintenance of 85 hectares of native woodland. The Reserve is classified as a Yellow Box/Blakely’s Red Gum Woodland Endangered Ecological Community.

Works in 2007/2008 included:

  • Weed control.
  • Tree and shrub planting. The main species planted were: Acacia dealbata, Acacia dawsonii, Acacia decora, Acacaia vestita, Bursaria spinosa, Dodonea cuneata, some Eucalyptus meliodora and Eucalyptus viminalis. This brings the total plantings in the Reserve to about 11,000.
  • An additional walking track was laid out in the Trust land, joining up with the university. This brings the total track length to 4 km.
  • When not planting, or engaged in weed control, volunteer activities were taken up with rabbit control, removing old tree guards as well as re-staking new tree guards, creating firebreaks and Phalaris slashing, comprehensive weed and native plant walkover/surveys.

This was done with 460 hrs of volunteer work plus a lot of unrecorded hours.

  • In 2008 a major flora and fauna survey was commissioned, and was carried out by Ray Mjadwesch, along with help from some volunteers and TAFE students. This survey will be used to update the Management Plan. Other reports that have been finalised, or are still being finalised include the: Weed Management Plan Tenure and Policy Discussion Paper Log placement for habitat Paper and Conserving Your Local Environment Leaflet
  • A notable event this year was the commemoration of John Cousins (our founding president) with a ceremony, memorial plaque and tree planting. Another was when we won the inaugural Jo Ross Memorial Award (from Greening Bathurst).

The Boundary Road Reserve Landcare Group was established in 1997 and holds monthly working bees, quarterly meetings and participates in the monthly Greening Bathurst meetings. Additional executive meetings are held as required.
